The Big Problem
And traditional, slow construction methods that cannot keep up
Disrupt the construction and housing industry by partnering with individuals, businesses, governments, and NGOs to build modular infrastructure anytime, anywhere in 90 days.
By teaming up with innovative and tech-driven architects, industrial and engineering designers, and production engineers who want to make an impact in the social sector.
As a fun, summer project to try and solve one problem. From building a cardboard prototype in the dorm rooms of IIT Madras, to manufacturing 1000+ cabins today.
Shreeram and Gobinath, the founders of Modulus Housing, volunteered for the organization ‘Engineers without borders’ during the Chennai floods in 2015. This is when they noticed a need for temporary housing for the displaced, during natural calamities. And eventually discovered their passion to create innovative construction solutions.
Right there on campus as second year students pursuing civil engineering, they began to build their first prototype of foldable houses that could contribute to disaster relief efforts.
This prototype was a temporary, telescopic portable module [when folded is a 6ft by 6ft box, and when unfolded becomes a 20ft by 20ft ready-to-use shelter].
With this prototype, they signed up as a participant in the IIT Madras Center For Innovation's Open House event - a space for young innovators to showcase their work.
The goal? To showcase the product and collect feedback.
Why? To assess the power of their idea and product market fit.
Did they get what they want? They made it to the newspaper, connected with 60+ attendees, met an IIT alumni mentor who believed in this idea, and generated a lead who wanted to set up a modular room on his terrace.
Getting funding for hardware startups was far from easy. But there's never really one road to success, is there?
They participated in competitions (with a cash prize), won one after another, and managed to save up and reinvest it into building a better prototype.
With the wins, funds, and the product being passion-driven, user-driven, as well as impact-driven... they were on track for success.
Bearing this vision in mind, they put together a business plan and prepared to launch into the market.
With the required funding, team, and support, they did pilot tests for L & T. In this project, they set up modular housing for immigrant workers at construction sites.
While solving this problem, they were also working on setting up rural healthcare infrastructure for SELCO. Both L & T and SELCO loved the products and came back for more!
Around this time, the Covid-19 pandemic put everything on hold indefinitely. But the pilots built the credibility they needed at this time, and the PMO’s office handpicked Modulus based on recommendations from organisations like SELCO and Habitat for Humanity to help in the war against COVID.
Modulus Housing partnered with Sree Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology to co-create the all-new modHeal, a ready-made portable hospital.
This auxiliary medical unit was then certified by Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) so we could build and deploy it all over India.
Realizing that these structures could serve a bigger, better purpose than they had ever imagined was a gamechanger. A home, an office, and now a hospital? What's next?
As the team lay the ground for modular infrastructure during the pandemic, the state governments in India came back for more.
Modulus Housing built the first AgriCab units in Meghalaya for the Integrated Village Cooperative Societies (IVCS) project, an initiative to aid rural and agro-entrepreneurship efforts.
The team delivered more units across Nagaland and Odisha for the National Health Mission's ECRP Phase-II.
Then built 20 EduCab units to aid the Anganwadi program in Narayanpet, Telengana.
After contributing to housing, healthcare, and educational infrastructure, Modulus Housing partnered with NGOs like Nostos Homes and Habitat For Humanity.
This time, to launch four pilots of social housing in India as well as Malawi, East Africa.
Entrepreneurship is being naïve enough to think that we can change the world. And being resourceful enough to try and make it happen.
Modulus Housing is home to driven individuals with a vision and dreams to change the world. We want to grow together as a team as we further our cause.
Today, we have our range of great products. Now, we're on the lookout for a great team to help us build and deliver them to those in need.
Want to join us in this journey and change the world?
We pour our sweat, tears, and blood into making our products insanely great. Working with us means there's always a pinch of pride and a dash of belief.
The construction industry is a dinosaur - so we don't fight for the biggest piece of the pie. We are here to create value and take confident steps forward.
We are trying to create something that doesn't exist. To accomplish this, we team up with people who are the best at what they do. Are you the best at what you do?
With trust, comes confident delegation of work, the ability to take ownership, and being open to feedback. A combination of this is crucial to deliver our best to the world.
And when not to. The world of startups is so unpredictable that you need to be able to modify your dreams and actions on the fly.
The world doesn't respond well to change. And we are here to solve a crucial problem in a way the world may or may not approve. As a team, we're all ready to plough through these challenges.
